Prague... Yet Another Day...
All through Europe we've seen many unique doorways... This red one stood out in an area with mostly earth tone buildings. While admiring the door, it opened and a car drove in... so there's a whole little world going on behind this door!
This was not a designated pedestrian area but there were very few vehicles. We were able to walk down the cobbled road and window shop. Carrying only backpacks, we weren't in the position to buy too many things. Especially on the first stop of our journey! I did manage to buy and pack a couple small pieces of art... but lost them in Hurricane Harvey. Better go back and try finding the items again!
This poster hanging in one of the shopping areas REALLY caught my eye! An advertisement for a photographer would be having an exhibit of pics he took at Burning Man. This is an event that takes place in the desert outside the Reno/Sparks area. Held at the end of summer, cars and floats decorated for the event can be found all over town. When people come out after a week of festivities, they are full of dust.
Once again, we crossed the beautiful Vitava River. Looking back, we were able to see several bridges connecting the two lands. Leaves on the trees were turning fall colors. Domes, spires... all things Prague!
We passed by an outdoor cafe. On every chair, red blankets and gas heaters were provided to keep customers warm. It's kind of fun to cozy up and have a cocktail! Who says you can't enjoy outdoor seating in a cold environment?!?
Jeremy and I stood on top of the hill overlooking the "City of a Thousand Spires". Though some refer to it as the City of a Hundred or City of Five Hundred Spires... we heard the majority of people describe it as Thousand... So many spires, churches and dorms. This area with red roofs was a great spot for a selfie!
After taking our selfie, we looked over the city. From way above, we noticed a wall but could not tell what it was made of. It looked kind of like people, little statues. Intrigued, we planned to find it when we went back down!
Standing outside the Basicla of St George, we prepared to venture inside. Looks are deceiving... the colorful but simple exterior was completely opposite of the Gothic style within. The oldest surviving building in the Prague Castle, it is now an art gallery and concert hall.
ome kids never grow up! Jeremy couldn't resist becoming part of the Monument of Julius Zeyer, a poet. The sculptures are characters from his works. They are made of marble and seem to be emerging from the rocks. This was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. It's a peaceful, grotto setting worth visiting... bring a picnic lunch!
Venturing on in search of the wall we'd seen from above, we came upon the Senate Gardens. Jeremy has a keen sense of direction and felt the wall was nearby. The gardens were incredibly manicured with sculptures throughout. Pathways led us by a koi pond and a cage with owls.
It felt like we were trapped in a maze. Shrubbery lined paths throughout the grounds, left us walking without knowing where we were going. Wandering through, we passed by sculptures, a stage with seating area and a closed museum. Then we came upon an opening in the green walls and there was the wall!!! It wasn't a wall of people after all... it was like drippings. Appropriately... it's made of drip stone and was constructed between 1623 and 1630. There are weird clues on the wall that insinuate possible openings... it's a mystery that many visitors wish they could solve!
Again we came across more bubble makers! Waving wands created hundreds, if not thousands of bubbles. Children and adults alike, ran after the bubbles. I took SO many photos... and videos... and slow motion videos!
We played a little hide and go seek in an orchard. A cement walkway ran up a grassy hill. Many people were walking along this area but really no one was playing in the orchard. This area of grass and trees in the midst of old buildings, was a peaceful place to rest for a bit... we walked so much while in Prague... anywhere from six to eleven miles!
We didn't realize until later, that we were looking at the American Embassy in Prague. The United States flag flew proudly... waved in the breeze. Had we known, we definitely would have walked up the hill... it would have been quite a walk!
Still walking, I begged Jeremy to walk along the river with me so I could take a photo from under the bridge. The shoreline of the river was so stunning, I couldn't resist the bridge with the beautiful backdrop. Again, not as clear and precise as I had hoped, but it's hard to mess up this scenery too much :-)
