Quick Return to Athlone, Ireland

Quick Return to Athlone, Ireland

We covered some ground… left The Quiet Man town of Cong and headed to Adare for lunch with friends. We had a Bailey’s and Coffee at Bill Chawke’s Bar. Then headed to Aunty Lena’s Bar and Lounge for a delicious lunch! Back in the car, we had to make a decision on where we wanted to spend the night… Athlone was the winner! We love that town! Logging into www.airbnb.com, we easily found a two bedroom apartment that allowed a one night rental. This place was AMAZING. Clean, spacious… two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen, living room and dining area. We could have easily stayed for an extended period. It was a quick walk into the lively part of town.

After our smooth check-in, we took our friend to Sean’s Pub. This fun bar is listed in the Top 25 bars in the World and is the oldest pub in Ireland. Sean’s has so much character. When we arrived, we walked through lots of groups gathered for after work drinks… music was playing, sawdust on the floor. We found a table outside. Great place for a Guinness in the heart of the country. Outside the back door is the River Shannon, so it’s in a scenic location.

As we left to move on to the next bar, we noticed this sign in Sean’s Pub window. The bar has three sections… the main bar is rather narrow and indoors, the next area is outside-ish but covered. The outside gathering spot is where the band plays and has several high top tables. Continuing on through the bar, you reach the back (where we had our beers) and it is outdoors with a few umbrellas. The rock walls and fresh air made this a favorite for me. This is such a popular place and the main bar is so small that I can see why they prefer bridal shower parties and the like, gather in the outdoor areas. Funny way to request it, though!

The actual town of Athlone is quite small but adorable. In the heart is the remains of a castle. This visit, we were happy to see the castle is being restored. Built along the River Shannon, this it served as a defense location for the military. Now, in modern times, the streets are lined with bars and restaurants. Fun, walkable and a place we will definitely return for a longer stay!

Continuing on, we headed across the street to The Snug. Another lively local bar! We entered looking for food but found we’d have to go next door, order and then bring it back to eat. Not an issue at all… it was easy. We brought back pizza and enjoyed cocktails. The band playing was excellent! People were dancing, singing… to the Van Morrison, Doobie Brother’s and other music from the 70’s/80’s.

All good things must come to an end… such a fun night of socializing and enjoying the Irish culture. On our walk home, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul was lit up in all her glory. I had to click a quick photo!

Just before crossing the River Shannon and heading back to our flat, I stopped and took a photo of the back street of Athlone. Sean’s Pub and other fun places line this river front pathway. We continued across the river and settled in for a much needed night of sleep! Tomorrow is another day!
