Six Months Since Hurricane Harvey...
At first, we spent a crazy amount of money eating out every meal. We had nowhere to cook or prepare food so restaurants were our only option. Slowly, we figured out how to create a cooking area. Our friend built us a sink with a bit of counter space. We had a Weber grill donated, bought a crock pot and a griddle... we were on our way. Just a week ago, we purchased an induction stove from IKEA for $49 and a kitchen . That has been life changing
During our “journey”, we h ave experienced two RARE Houston snow storms! With no doors and no heat... we had to wrap up in scarves, beanies and stay bundled up under the covers! Of all winters to snow... We really need to get the HVAC replaced before the heat comes... it's just SO pricey. Not the units, but the installation!
We ordered the ledger rock for our fireplace...can't wait until it's up. That's a LONG way off though...
We purchased floor tile and manufactured hardwood. at Floor and Decor I searched and searched for a good deal. Without insurance, we need to be frugal and get the most for our money. We succeeded with these choices!
We also have the thin set and grout for the tile. Our list of “still needs” is long. Thankfully, our gofundme page brought in enough to get our insulation and flooring supplies. The rest we will have to work hard to earn!
Our friends have a male and female Border Collie... they had a litter of puppies and gave us one to bring life back into our home. What a change! We have something besides the disaster... the slab floors... the bare framing... to focus on! Sapphire has livened up our home!
This is looking into the newly completed bathroom! YAY! We have a finished restroom. This is in our Casita, which is a guest bedroom detached from the house.
The walkin shower... the tile on the wall (and floor) will also be on the floor in the kitchen. We got a great deal on it!!!
Instead of it being a reguular bedroom, we made the casita more of a self-sufficient room. We have a kitchenette ready to install. The couch opens up to a bed and then has a spot for storing blankets during the day. The recliner is COMFY!
Next phase of the rebuild project is to complete our Master Bedroom. It is now taped, floated and textured! I am stressing about the paint... so many colors to choose from! If I could come to a decision, I could start painting right away!
All I need to do in the master bathroom is pick out the vanities... The floors will be installed and the walk in closet will be finished... toilet installed, shelves put back in. It will be time to take a relaxing bath!
This rock will be installed on the two walls behind the Jacuzzi tub! It should look awesome.
We made it through an emotional day... a milestone... Though we never imagined we would have so much left to do six months out, we have settled in to this “new normal”. At least, no matter what... we will always have our sunrises and sunsets!
